This surgery consists of improving the shape and volume of the breast, by placing a breast implant.
Although there are several types of breast implants, we should point out that ideally they should contain silicone gel, instead of saline solution. The silicone gel provides stability in shape and volume while assuring safety over time.
Among these silicone prostheses, filled with silicone gel, we do our due diligence in order to select the best brand to be used; we go over reports, issued by monitoring and control bodies around the world, mainly the ones produced by the United States Food and Drug Administration, F.D.A. (www.fda.gov). Over the last 25 years, the FDA has only certified 3
brands of breast implants. Those are the ones we have been using for over 20 years with our patients, in order to assure the greatest safety over time.
At the present moment, there is no breast implant brand in the world that lasts a lifetime. The average lifespan for breast implants is currently between 20 and 25 years, though the FDA recommends that they should be replaced every 10 years.
Likewise, we can affirm that the most commonly used approach to position these mammary prostheses is the areola; well above the approach that is made by making an incision in the breast lower edge (sub-mammal groove). When the prostheses are placed through the armpit, they are usually inflatable saline implants.
The breast implant volume will depend first on what the patient wants as size of bra’s cup. It will also depend on variables such as the patient's height, back width, breast base, nipple height, and preoperative breast volume.
This surgery is strictly ambulatory, under general anesthesia (the breast is an organ rich in nerve endings, which simply does not allow local anesthesia)
The pain is usually described as moderate to low; in the postoperative period, it is easily manageable with commonly used analgesics.
To assist in the recovery, postoperative physical therapy (external ultrasound, lymphatic drainage massage) is often used. It is recommended for the first 3 weeks after surgery, and is conducted by specialized personnel.
The time off work is usually no more than 3 days.
Keep in mind though, that, as in any other surgical procedure, we start talking about end results between the 4th and the 6th week after surgery.
